KEY WEST BW ACTION
By: Ritchie Zacker Myself and a few friends decided to head down to the keys for a few days for some hot blackfin tuna action but what we didn't know was that the blackfins were few and far between but the wahoo were thick.
The first three quarters of the day we spent bluewater hunting and I got four wahoo that weighed 50, 48, 45 and 42 lbs. I also got three kingfish that weighed 25, 20 and 13 pounds. After hunting bluewater for a while we decided to head into the reef for some bottom fish.
We were working one of the reef drops that went from 70 to 90 ft and on my second drop I saw a very large black grouper heading towards the reef. I was getting pretty close to the bottom when the grouper looked back to give me a quick look to see where I was when it made the biggest mistake in its life. It gave me the perfect shot. I pointed my 130 APEX for the head and it hit its mark. A perfect kill shot right behind the head and the grouper didn't even twitch. I grabbed my prize and headed to the surface. On the way back to the boat I checked my watch to see how deep I was where I had pulled the trigger and I was at 78 ft. I got a few quick pics and got back in for some more hot action. I shot a few other groupers and snappers and then we headed in. When we got back to the dock and put the grouper on the certified scale the fish weighed 53.5 lbs. A new pending world record. Man was I stoked.
The next day we didn't find any bluewater fish but I did manage to shot and stone a sweet 75 lb amberjack and we shot some more grouper and snapper on the reefs. It was a weekend that I'll never forget.
